Gardening Bulbs-Helpful Hints Of The Planting Flower Bulbs That Will Blossom In Summer

If you want your garden blooming from June to October, you need to plant gardening bulbs, bulbotubers and tubers in spring, when there is no danger of the night and light morning frost. It is possible to plant bulbs till the end of May.

Bulbs like sunny areas, so you need to plant bulbs in those areas of your garden, and if you plant bulbs in flowerpots, you should keep them in sunny spots of the garden.

There are few options of planting bulbs. One of the most convenient of them is using special garden tools, like bulb planter with short or long handle. As usual, you will follow the rule, which says that gardening bulb must be planted in a depth, twice the size of its height. For example, you need to make a hole of 10 centimeters deep for bulb with the height of 5 centimeters.
There is an exception of this rule: Dahlia bulbs and few others types of bulbs should be planted closer to the surface of the soil. And it is a good idea to check instructions on the bulb package before planting.

Smaller bulbs should be planted in a distance of about 10 centimeters from one another. For Gladiolus bulbs planting distance is 12 centimeters, for Lily bulbs this distance is 30 centimeters, and for Dahlia bulbs planting distance is 40 centimeters. If you want to have dense flower bed, it is possible to plant bulbs closer to each other.

Before planting you need to make soil light, and after this, you should make it even. Summer gardening bulbs can be planted in any kind of soil with the condition that the soil has good drainage.
If you have heavy clay soil, it is recommended, that you mix the top layer of it with the sand or compost. You may use garden or peat soil for flower pots.

After you have planted you bulbs, you need to water them immediately, because summer bulbs need big amount of water. Plentiful watering is important for growing roots faster. It is important to keep soil in wet condition in this time of the year. But you should remember that very wet top layer of the soil is good breeding ground for the weeds.

Also you need to know that it is not recommended to sprinkle gardening bulbs and flowers with cold water in the hot summer weather, because plants can fall into the "shock state" and will not be able to assimilate the moisture and nutrients; also this will increase probability of the burns on the leaves. In order to avoid moisture evaporation you should water the planted flower bulbs and flowers during early morning or evening time.

It is good to know about importance of the colour composition and you need to select it correctly. For example, you may make composition from 20 bulbs of Anemone, 9 bulbs of Tiger Lily, 3 bulbs of Dahlia. You will get very nice colour spectrum in one close area of the garden if you plant Begonia with parviflorous sorts of Dahlia.

It will make your garden more interesting when you grow flowers with different heights. If you decide to experiment with the flowers of different height, you may want to plant Gladiolus or Lily in the foreground of the bushes and other tall plants. This will emphasize the brightness of the flowers. Low flowers, like Begonia and Oxalis are looking nice if planted among other low perennials.

Judy Lenox lies bludgeoned to death in her neatly tended flower bed. She had been the apple of her father’s eye, mayor of Tallahassee, mother of two young children, and a successful businesswoman. Judy’s teenage lawn-boy hated her. Every time he had worked for her, he had walked away humiliated. Three other teenage boys cannot explain what they were doing taking a dead woman’s car for a joy ride. Because of Judy, her former business partner had lost his business and family. She had fired the fair-minded planning commissioner who had served Tallahassee for 24 years. Her older stepbrother, when a young boy, had had to wrap his bed pillow around his head to muffle out his mother’s inconsolable crying. Judy’s mother had stolen his father away. His father had little time for him and his sister after Judy was born. Who else had this popular politician maligned? Detective Bailey McCall, slowly and with southern gentleness, sifts through diverse lives in Tallahassee and finds a crosshatch of motives for Judy’s murder. Did corrupt politics, business dealings, juvenile hormones, or two generations of family dysfunction cause this loving mother to be struck down?

Perennial Gardens for Texas

Perennial Gardens for Texas

A perennial garden is an ever-changing source of delight. Each season brings new colors and textures in flowers and foliage. As the years go by, perennial plantings mature and interweave into forms more beautiful and surprising than a season's growth of annuals can ever give. Best of all, a perennial garden can grow almost anywhere with plants suited to local soils, temperatures, and rainfall. This book is a complete guide to perennial gardening in Texas and similar regions of eastern New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas. In Part One, Julie Ryan offers a historical sketch of cottage gardens and perennial borders, with a sampler of some of their modern variations. In Part Two, she defines the major ecological regions of Texas and, with words and color photographs, takes you on a tour of lovely public and private gardens in each region. You'll find all the "how to" information for creating your own garden in Part Three. Ms. Ryan describes and pictures over 300 flowering perennials, bulbs, foliage plants, and old roses suitable for Texas gardens, with lists of companion annuals, vines, shrubs, and small trees. Accompanying charts provide quick reference to each plant's preferred regions and cultivation requirements. In addition, Ms. Ryan discusses how to design a garden and select plants, prepare the beds, and deal with garden pests. She concludes with substantial lists of resources, including mail-order suppliers of perennials, bulbs, and old roses.

Fantastic color photographs and excellent writing make this an inspirational and accessible guide for specialty plant collectors, alpine and rock gardeners, and city gardeners, as well as anyone gardening in small spaces. Readers will learn about the ease and practicality of growing bulbs in containers-bringing year-round color and interest to one's home. Popular classic bulbs are included, as well as a range of more unusual varieties such as the delicate-looking but surprisingly unfussy corydalis, and graceful, late-spring-flowering scillas. The book details how to plan and prepare for a year of flowering bulbs-how to store bulbs during the dormant period and get them ready for planting, how to make homemade shelters to protect plants during the growing season before they begin to flower, and how to create simple accessories that show off the final display. Detailed advice on seed propagation provides gardeners an inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and satisfying method of increasing their range of species bulbs.

Their names sound as exotic as the blossoms they produce - gloxinias, tigridias, sprekelias - and only begin to hint at the exciting world of color and fragrance that awaits those who venture beyond the local garden center's bins of tulips and daffodils. And while their names may not exactly roll off the tongue, tender bulbs share one key advantage of their better-known relatives: simplicity. Everything required to produce strikingly beautiful blooms comes in a convenient package just waiting for the proper conditions to grow and flourish, returning year after year, provided some basic conditions are met. Tender bulbs are tailor-made for the modern gardener who is always looking for something new to grow, yet who may lack the time or space to maintain elaborate flower beds. These bulbs thrive in containers and quickly fill small areas with a profusion of unusual and strikingly beautiful flowers. The text is accompanied by gorgeous and practical full-color photographs.

Excerpt from book: a general rule, a soil with a proportion of sand is best suited to the growth of bulbs. Some even thrive in pure sand; and there are very few which will succeed in heavy, close, clayey, or peaty soil. This fact must be borne in mind in the culture of all bulbs. Many require a rich soil, and some will bear manuring; but even these need light soil and well-rotted manures. A good compost for the growth of common bulbs is one part clean sand, one part leaf-mould 6r rich garden-loam, and one part well-rotted cow-dung. A good substitute for this latter is the bottom of an old hot-bed; but it should be very well rotted, so that its component parts cannot be distinguished, and such as will fall away like loam. In the preparation of beds for hardy bulbs, the following directions may be given: ? Situation. This should always be sunny; though, except for early- blooming species, it need not face the south. There are, in all the numerous family of bulbs, very few species that delight in shade. Many of our best-known bulbs are natives of countries where the sun is far hotter than in our own; where the year is divided into but two seasons, ? the rainy and the dry, ? during the former of which the growth is perfected, and, after blooming, the plant rests in a state of perfect inactivity till called into growth again by the return of the wet season, or, in some cases, sending up its flower-stem, then followed by the growth. In this latter case, however, the bulb is at rest; the bloom being perfected during growth, and only developed at a later period. In the culture of bulbs, as well as in all other culture, we must, by every means in our power, approximate to the natural conditions of growth; and, the nearer we attain this end, the more perfect will be our success. Thus i...

Excerpt from book: December, with success, giving the same protection as to Tulips or Hyacinths; but if the roots are suffered to remain in the ground after flowering, it will never bloom again, and most assuredly perish. Our season is too long for it; if left in the ground through the summer, it commences growing in autumn, forms its flower buds before winter sets in, and dies. Observing this, I have taken up the roots the first of August, and kept them out of ground till the time of planting in autumn, with perfect success. After drying, the roots may be kept in dry sand or moss. LILITJM. The Lily. Have you seen but a bright Lily grow, Before rude hands have touched it ? Queen of the field, in milk-white mantle drest, The lovely Lily waved her curling crest. All the species of this splendid genus, with which we are acquainted, may be considered worthy of a place in every good collection of plants. Many of the species are well known, while a greater number are not often seen in our gardens. The Lily is an interesting flower to the young florist as well as the botanist, on account of the simplicity of its structure and magnitude and distinct character of its different parts and organs. The root of the Lily, or what is generally denominated the root, is a scaly bulb, the scales being laid over each other in an imbricate form, inclosing the germ, or bud. The bulb is not a root, strictly speaking, but a bud containing the embryo of the future plant. The roots are thrown out from the bottom of these bulbs, or buds, and, unlike the fibres of the Tulip, are perennial; and on their strength depends, in a great measure, the vigor of the future plant. Bulbs, long kept out of ground, are very much weakened, and a number of years will elapse before they recover strength to bloom in grea...
